His 2008 studio album, Imagine, entered the Dutch album charts at No. 1, a first for a dance music artist in Dutch music history.
He started making music when he was 14.
He first started working as a DJ in a local night club called Nexus.
Van Buuren followed his dream of becoming a professional musician, despite the promise of a lucrative career in law in the Netherlands, where he finished his law degree in 2004.
He began making music after he was inspired by French electronic music composer Jean Michel Jarre.
In 2009, Van Buuren married Erika van Thiel, his girlfriend for nine years. Their daughter was born in July 2011, and their son in July 2013.
Van Buuren hosts “A State of Trance”, a weekly radio show that mostly play trance music and other genres. The show, which has 20 million weekly listeners in 26 countries, propelled him to superstardom and garnered heavy following of trance fans globally.
He was already a DJ when he was still a student. He played more than four times a week during school holidays.
In 2011, he was appointed Officer of the Order of Orange Nassau for his services to music.
He has won numerous accolades, including DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs fan poll a record of five times, including an unprecedented four consecutive years 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and again in 2012. He is currently the #1 DJ atop DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJ poll.
